something like knowing
Something Like Knowing, the 33rd MFA in Studio Art Cohort Exhibition, The William Benton Museum of Art, Storrs, CT., University of Connecticut, 2024.
group statement
We locate ourself by extending our gaze, our hands, and our questions, looking forward and backward, reaching side to side.
We collect materials from our earth, our lives, our shared histories, and our personal stories, which help us navigate ourself and our surroundings.
We find ourselves digging, falling, pushing down, climbing, reaching, floating up.
We press ink to paper, hand to clay, brush to canvas, a shutter button.
We release a held breath, a tight grip, a need for certainty.
We explore domestic, natural, outer, and inner spaces, accumulating objects, sensations, memories, and questions that, pieced together, act as something like a map to guide us.
We don't have all the answers, yet we gain assurance through making. We give ourselves and each other a sense of purpose, direction, and belonging, a feeling that is something like knowing but not quite the same.
